The short version
Leaking seams, sagging sections, wrong pitch, blocked downspouts and detached runs are all repairs. Fascia damage behind the gutter is carpentry first. And a gutter that overflows when clean is not broken at all — it is undersized, which no repair fixes.
Six things that go wrong with a gutter, in order of how often
Gutters fail in a small and predictable set of ways. Five of the six are repairable, and the sixth is the one most people assume is happening when it is not.
Leaking seams and end caps
Sectional gutter is joined every ten feet or so, and every joint is sealed rather than continuous. Sealant is a consumable — it dries, shrinks and lets go, faster in Central Texas sun than almost anywhere.
Genuinely repairable, and the cheapest thing on this list. If your gutter drips in a straight line at regular intervals, this is what it is.
Sagging between hangers
Either the hangers have pulled, the spacing was too wide to start with, or the fascia behind them has softened. Water then pools in the low spot instead of running to the downspout.
Repairable, but the fix has to address why it sagged. Re-screwing a hanger into rotted fascia buys a season.
Pitch that was never right
A gutter needs a slight fall toward the downspout. Too little and it holds water; too much and it overshoots at the corner. Both look like a mystery leak from the ground.
Repairable by rehanging the affected section, and worth checking before anyone sells you a full replacement.
Downspout blockage or a missing extension
The gutter is fine; the water has nowhere to go. Or it goes somewhere and lands against the foundation, which is a bigger problem than the gutter was.
The cheapest repair on the list and the most commonly misdiagnosed as a gutter failure.
Detached sections after wind or ice
Central Texas gets both, and a gutter full of water is heavy enough that one hard freeze can pull a whole run away from the fascia.
Repairable if the fascia survived. If it did not, that is carpentry before it is gutter work.
Fascia and soffit damage behind the gutter
This is the one people do not expect, and it is why a gutter problem sometimes turns into a larger invoice. Water that has been overflowing behind the gutter for a season has been running down the fascia board the whole time.
At that point the wood comes first. Flashing detail at that junction sits with Gutter installation Hutto TX.
Where the arithmetic changes
Repair is usually the right answer, and there is a recognisable point where it stops being.
| Situation | Repair or replace | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two leaking seams | Repair | Sealant is a consumable. Replacing a run over a joint is spending badly |
| A single sagging section | Repair | Rehang that section and check the fascia behind it |
| Blocked or missing downspout | Repair | Cheapest fix available, and frequently the whole problem |
| Leaks at most joints along the run | Probably replace | Sealing every joint costs close to a new seamless run that has none |
| Gutter overflows even when clean | Replace | A capacity problem. No repair fixes an undersized gutter |
| Fascia rotted along multiple sections | Replace, after carpentry | Nothing will hold to soft wood |
The one that surprises people
A gutter that overflows when it is clean is not broken. It is too small, or it has too few downspouts, for the volume of water Central Texas rain delivers in a short burst. Cleaning it again will not help and neither will sealing it, which is why that row says replace — and why it has its own page: Gutter replacement Hutto TX.
A gutter problem is a roof problem two seasons later
Gutters are the least interesting part of a roof and among the most consequential when they fail, because the damage happens somewhere you are not looking.
Water that overflows behind a gutter runs down the fascia board, into the soffit, and along the bottom edge of the roof decking. By the time it shows up inside the house it has been working on the eave for months, and the repair is no longer a gutter repair.
Water that lands against the foundation instead of being carried away is the other half of it — and in Central Texas clay soils, foundation movement from repeated wetting and drying at the perimeter is considerably more expensive than any roofing work.
Which is why a gutter that drips is worth dealing with in the same season, and why our free inspection covers the eave and the gutter line rather than just the field of the roof — Roofing inspection Hutto TX, or call (737) 306-0017 to book one.
Two things worth not doing
Do not seal a gutter from the outside. Sealant applied to the exterior of a joint looks like a repair for about a month, then peels, because it is being asked to bond to a wet surface under UV. The joint is sealed from inside the gutter, on a dry surface, after cleaning.
Do not climb a ladder to a second-story gutter. Gutter work is at the eave, which is the single most awkward place to work off a ladder, and it is where a large share of homeowner falls happen. The saving is not worth it.
Questions we get on this
What does gutter repair usually involve?
Most often resealing joints and end caps from inside the gutter on a dry surface, rehanging a sagging section, correcting the fall toward the downspout, or clearing and extending a downspout. Five of the six common failures are genuinely repairable; the sixth is fascia damage behind the gutter, which is carpentry first.
My gutter leaks in several places. Repair or replace?
If it is leaking at most of the joints along a run, replacement is usually the better spend, because sealing every joint costs close to a seamless run that has no joints to fail. One or two leaking seams is a repair every time.
Why does my gutter overflow even though it is clean?
Because it is too small, or has too few downspouts, for the volume Central Texas rain delivers in a short burst. That is a capacity problem, not a fault, and no amount of cleaning or sealing fixes it. It is the one case where replacement is the answer even though nothing is broken.
Can you seal a gutter from the outside?
You can, and it fails. Sealant applied to the exterior of a joint is being asked to bond through dirt and then survive direct UV, and it peels within a season. The joint gets sealed from inside the gutter, on a cleaned dry surface.
How urgent is a dripping gutter?
More urgent than it looks, because the damage happens where you are not looking. Water overflowing behind a gutter runs down the fascia, into the soffit and along the bottom edge of the decking, so a gutter problem becomes an eave repair in a season or two — and water landing against the foundation in Central Texas clay is more expensive than anything on the roof. Call (737) 306-0017 to have it looked at.
Should I just do it myself?
Not at a second-story eave. Gutter work happens at the most awkward place to reach from a ladder, and it is where a large share of homeowner falls occur. Ground-level downspout clearing is fine; the rest is not worth the saving.
